As long as the lock lever is as far over as it can go and the head does not move when you try to pull it up the head is locked in place.
Kitchenaid bowl not locking. If you over adjust the screw you may not be able to lock the motor head when it is lowered. Now the bowl pops out with ease. I have used it successfully for soft doughs such as cookies and general mixing purposes. Kitchenaid mixer bowls lock into place on the stand so that the bowl doesn t vibrate or become dislodged.
The grooves on my bowl never really have been that defined. The beater to bowl clearance being out of adjustment too high can prevent the locking mechanism from working. If the flat beater is too low and it strikes the bowl the coating may wear off the beater or the wires on the whip may wear. New and improved with stronger easy snap tabs and locking cover to use while mixing.

Don t get me wrong. Kitchenaid artisan mixer problems with kneading i have owned a kitchenaid artisan stand mixer with a twisting lock bowl for about 3 years. Here s a very quick effective free fix for this outstandingly fine mixer. When pushing the lock lever over to the lock position it may not move all the way to the right.
5 and 5 quart stainless steel mixing bowls. A common fault with this mixer is the hold lock slips. If i look at the bottom now straight on the one side does kinda look a little more rounded but i m not sure. The locking mechanism also allows use of the quick dump method of cake mixing where all the ingredients are dumped into the bowl at the same time which can create strain on the machine rather than a traditional mixing method where the sugar shortening and butter for example are.

Not sure what model you have but if you look into crevice on the side of the hinged portion between the mixer body and the power head and move the head locking lever back and forth you should see the locking pin move up and down between the power head and the body. When properly adjusted the flat beater will not strike the bottom or side of the bowl.
Or could it be the bottom locking teeth. Rated 1 out of 5 by discouraged from thread ring cumbersome to use i purchased the kitchen aid stand mixer over a year a go the thread ring does not secure the class bowl at all.
